On Wednesday, September 25, Ethel Freeman Black passed peacefully away surrounded by her loving family. She was 102 year old.
At the age of 11 she showed great ability on the violin and was taken as a special student to SU’s School of Music Violin Department where she studied with Andre Polash. In her senior year of high school she competed for a full 4 year scholarship and won, which she accepted. A few years later she received a full graduate scholarship to the New York Juilliard Graduate School. Years later she became a member of the Syracuse Symphony, and also had a private practice.
She married Dr. Martin Black in 1948 and had 4 wonderful children. They were greatly influenced by their father. They had a wonderful life doing so many beautiful family things, and still do. Ethel’s whole life was raising her family. That is what she loved.
She enjoyed bridge and golf, and loved entertaining. She was a member of Temple Adath Yeshurun, the Auxiliary of Menorah Park, the Syracuse Jewish Federation, Sigma Alpha Iota, The National Honorary Music Organization, and Hadassah.
She is survived by her 4 children~ Dr. Gerald (Barbara), Dr. Michael (Rosemary), Dr. Robert (Regina), her wonderful daughter Deborah, her sister-in-law Ellie Freeman; 16 great-grandchildren, 8 grandchildren and numerous cousins.
Services will be at 10:30AM on Sunday, September 29 at Sisskind Funeral Chapel. Friends may visit with the family immediately prior to the service on Sunday from 9:30-10:30 at the funeral chapel. Burial will be beside her beloved husband in Adath Yeshurun Cemetery.
The service will be live streamed on the Sisskind Funeral Service FaceBook page beginning at 10:25 on Sunday. Shiva will be observed at Ethel’s home on Sunday and Monday evenings from 7-9PM
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to The American Heart Association, Temple Adath Yeshurun, or The Upstate Norton College of Medicine to benefit The Martin Black Family Scholarship Fund.

Our Aunt Ethel was one of the most pleasant and loving people that I've ever known. She was warm and kind and very talented, and she will always be remembered fondly. We (Marc & family) wish peace and love and all the very best to all of Ethel's wonderful family.
