Janet S. Barkun passed away peacefully on August 16, her 57th wedding anniversary, after a brief illness. She was 81.

She served as a social worker at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, as a patient educator at the Prepaid Health Plan in Syracuse and as a visiting assistant professor of family medicine at the Upstate Medical University.

She was a lover of classical music from an early age. As a young girl, she studied at Interlochen and Aspen. Later, she and her husband hosted chamber music concerts at their home. She composed as well, including the processional for her wedding.

Jan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and devoted friend. She is survived by her beloved husband, Michael, her devoted daughters and their partners, Deborah Barkun and Bernardo Morillo of Philadelphia and Miriam and Joe Carmichiel of Honeoye Falls, NY and grandchildren Natalie and Jackson Carmichiel.

Because of COVID, funeral arrangements will be private.
