Duane M. Cady, MD

Duane M. Cady, MD, 86, passed away at his home on Monday, August 3rd. He was born to Maynard and Ellen Cady in Endicott, NY on February 28, 1934. He had been a resident of Lafayette, NY since 1970.

Duane was a 1955 graduate of Atlantic Union College, So. Lancaster, MA, and Loma Linda (CA) University School of Medicine in 1959. His surgical training was at SUNY Upstate Medical University. He practiced general surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse until his retirement in 1998. Following retirement, he served for a period of time as Interim President of his alma mater, Atlantic Union College.

From 1964-66 Duane served as a Captain in the United States Army which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. Duane’s commitment to organized medicine led him to such leadership roles as president of the Onondaga County Medical Society, Medical Society of the State of New York, and Chairman of the Board of the American Medical Association.

Duane was a long time member of the Westvale Seventh-day Adventist Church. Here he served in various leadership roles including finance, ministry and education. He was School Board Chair of Parkview Junior Academy for 10 years.

His family includes his wife of 65 years, Joyce; 5 children: Jann of LaFayette, Mark (Rise) of Rochester, Beth (Frederick) Burghardt, of LaFayette, David (Lira) of So. Lancaster, MA, and Jeffrey (Elizabeth) of Westvvale; 10 grandchildren: ; Arielle (Hector II) Flores of Maple Grove, MN, Ilana of So. Lancaster, MA, David II (Adriana) of Cincinnati, OH, Clarke and Camille Cady-McCrea of Rochester, Katharina, Annelise, Alaina Burghardt of LaFayette, Michael Epifani of Los Angeles, CA, and Samuel Cady of Westvale; 2 great-grandchildren, Giannna, Hector Flores III; one brother Harvey (Delores) of Littlestown, PA, one sister Ellen Carol (David) Titus of Vestal, and sister in-law Shirley Willis of Dallas, TX, many nieces and nephews, extended family members and a host of friends.

Duane is buried in the Onondaga County Veteran’s Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. A private Celebration of Duane’s life will be held in the Fall. Contributions in his memory may be made to a fund established in Duane’s honor for medical students in financial need. Gifts may be sent to: American Medical Association Foundation, 330 N.
