Harold Small

Harold Small passed away on July 1 at 89 surrounded by loving family. A life resident of Syracuse, Harold graduated from Syracuse University and pursued medicine at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He interned at St. Joseph’s Hospital, completed his residency at the University of Illinois, became Fellow of the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery in 1966 and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons in 1969.

He held a private practice in Syracuse for more than 50 years. He was also an active member of the Onondaga County Medical Society, Power Squadron, Lancet Society, Rotary Club, and the Boy Scouts of America. He was Chair of the Department of ENT at St. Joseph’s Hospital, a professor at Upstate Medical Center, and on staff at the VA Hospital in Syracuse.
His passion was sailing the “Sweet Irene” and sharing his beautiful home on the St. Lawrence River, 1000 Islands with family and friends.

He is survived by Irene, their children Natalie (Eric) West, Craig (Karen) Small, and Mark Small; and grandchildren Noa, Phoebe, Eli West, Jacob, Matthew, Leah Small, Maxwell, and Skylar Small; and also his brother Leonard Small. He was pre-deceased by his sister Cynthia.

Funeral services and burial were private.
