Ellen Schooler died peacefully October 18, 2019 after a brief illness. She was born in New York City May 5, 1931 to Emanuel and Bertha (Salzberg) Lamensdorf. She grew up in Rockville Centre, NY. After graduating from Syracuse University she briefly worked in NYC, moved to Massachusetts and then settled in Syracuse.
Ellie, as she was known to family, laughed easily with a quick wit. Ellie spent much of her life as an artist, painting and drawing, while listening to everything from rock to opera.  An intellectually curious person, Ellie was an avid reader of literature, fiction, and the New Yorker.  Most Sundays, she sat down with a cup of coffee, the New York Times crossword puzzle, and a pen. She frequently attended public lectures, feeding her many interests ranging from the arts to politics, attending gallery openings and the Syracuse Stage.
Ellie also enjoyed gardening and traveling. She was fond of animals and always had pet dogs and cats.  She volunteered at Syracuse Pubic Schools, tutoring immigrant and refugee children.
Ellie loved her family: children Esther (Bill) Sheppard, Aaron Schooler, and Marianne Schooler; granddaughter Meghan Dahlin; siblings David (Joyce) Lamensdorf, and Carol Michelman; and seven nephews.  She was predeceased by her husband, Kermit K. Schooler, and grandson Jay Dahlin.
A celebration of life is to be held on Saturday, November 2 at 2PM at the Delavan Center, 501 West Fayette Street, Syracuse 13204
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that contributions be made to Francis House.

Prayerful thoughts. Marianne, your mom was a wonderfully witty person. I am so happy to have had the opportunity to meet her. I will always remember the times we shared,q as you shopped at the Elsbeth Rose Botique. Wonderful memories. Love Roe
