Sidney Shapiro

Sidney L. Shapiro, 83, died Wednesday afternoon at Crouse Hospital. Born in Brooklyn, he was raised in Oswego. Sidney had been a resident of Syracuse for more than 35 years. As a teenager with his father Leon he began his lifelong work in the family business, Leon Shapiro Motor Sales of Oswego.
He was a member of Kiwanis, Congregation Adath Israel of Oswego, Temple Adath Yeshurun, Congregation Beth Sholom Chera Shas, Temple Concord, and an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
He was a competitive tennis player, a skilled poker player, and a rabid SU basketball fan.
He was pre deceased by his wives Helene in 1967 and Lenore in 2014; and his brother Herbert.
His family includes his children Peter (Beth), Michael (Sharon), Todd (Michele), and Joanna (Randy); grandchildren Hannah, Hilary, Ilyse, Jason, Marc, Samantha, and Jordyn; his brother Stephen, and his fiancé Kitty Barrett.
Funeral services will be at 11AM Sunday December 3 at Temple Adath Yeshurun, 450 Kimber Road. There will not be a calling hour prior to the service.
Burial will be in the Congregation Adath Israel section of Riverside cemetery in Oswego.
Contributions may be made to the Syracuse JCC.
Shiva will be observed at Todd and Michele’s home on Sunday from 6-8 and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9. www.sisskindfuneralservice.com

I a man so sorry for your families loss. Sid was a wonderful man. He was a long time supporter of the Safe Haven Museum and always felt how significant the story was. He helped to make sure the story continued to be told through his support.

Mother & I are saddened to hear of Sid's passing. He was always a Grand gent. He was good to my father when it was time for him to retire. Mother & Sid would joke about the Jewish guy & Episcopalian gal working the BINGO at Cat High for their kids. He was a fine fellow and will be missed by many.
