Steven K. Alexander, 81, died early Monday morning at St. Joseph's hospital. Born
June 5, 1936 in Berlin, Germany to Eugene and Lony Alexander, he came to the US
in December of 1939 with his parents as they fled Nazi Germany. Sadly most of his family who didn't escape perished in the holocaust.
They settled in Homer, NY where his father was a practicing physician. Steven enjoyed a "Huck Finn" childhood. He maintained his childhood friendships and Connections to Homer throughout his life.
He graduated from Hamilton College, and studied medicine in Basel, Switzerland.
After receiving his medical degree he served in the US Army 9th division in Vietnam.
He was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.
After his service he returned to Syracuse where he was a member of the first class of family practice residencies at St. Joseph's Hospital.
As he was nearing the end of his residency he met his future wife on a blind date set up by his Vietnam tent-mate's wife. They were married 3 months later.
He established his solo family medical practice in Dewitt where he was a respected
physician with a beloved patient base for more than 30 years.
He had a strong Jewish identity and supported many Jewish causes.
Steven was a lover of music, the arts, SU sports, golf, Porsches, german shephards, and was an avid reader of history.
His family includes his wife Linda of 47 years, their children Keith (Bea) Alexander, Eric (Apple) Alexander, Karen (Aaron) Pomerantz; grandchildren Mia, Zoey, Ethan, Mason, and Auggie; and his sister Eleanor (Arthur Farbenbloom) Sontag.
Funeral services will be at 11AM Wednesday, August 16, at Temple Concord.
Friends may visit with the family immediately prior to the service from 9:00 to 11AM at the Temple, 910 Madison Street, Syracuse.
Burial will be in the Temple Brith Sholom section of Cortland Rural Cemetery.
Contributions in Steven's memory may be to the Jewish Community Foundation of CNY. www.sisskindfuneralservice.com
