William (Bill) Pooler, 85, passed away on Thursday after years of dementia.
Bill grew up in Philadelphia, and after serving in Germany during the Korean War, he completed his undergraduate studies at Temple University and his Master's degree at the University of Connecticut. He then completed his Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Michigan and came to Syracuse with his wife, Rosemary, to become a Professor of Sociology in the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He had a happy fulfilling career at Syracuse until he retired in 2010.
He was a wonderful and well-loved professor who was passionate about his family, teaching, and running, and became an accomplished marathon runner. He was kind to everyone he met and was always supportive of his wife, Rosemary's, career in politics, government, and more recently the federal judiciary and Court of Appeals.
He was predeceased by his beloved Bubby, his father, George, his mother, Elizabeth, and his sister, Shannon. He is survived by his wife, his son, Michael, and daughter, Penelope (Mark) Eisenbies, and his two grandchildren, Broden and Asher.
Calling hours for Bill will be held from 10:00 AM to Noon on Monday, August 7, 2017 at Congregation Beth Sholom-Chevra Shas, 18 Patsy Lane, Jamesville, NY, and then followed by a service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Syracuse University's Sociology Department (302 Maxwell Hall, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, 13244) in Bill's memory.
